Home Nursing Service...the most difficult part(part 1)

Pardon me as it has been a while since my last post.Really have lesser time to write this days but that will change a bit from now on.
Homecare service is a life saving and life comforting service to those who are having some form of ill health or very elderly people with chronic or terminal conditions.
Having a caregiver around should be seen as God sending you an angel.
Infact it is a great blessing to have a caregiver to care for you or your loved one cause not many people can afford the service.

As good as homecare can be,I will be honest with you it also have a lot of difficult parts.
Will discuss only on one today and it is very crucial.
The joy of a homecare company is to have clients, the joy of caregiver is to be called for jobs.
The happiest part of been a caregiver is to know what to do and to be allowed  to do it but it will surprise you that this is not the case in most homes where this services are been rendered.
The caregivers who have been trained to do their jobs get to work and they get bossed by the relatives. The relatives takes charge how the client should be carried and how you should move the leg,how you feed the client, many how’s and when the caregiver try to explain that I know what to do,kindly allow me to do it.He or she becomes the enemy, and they request for another caregiver.
This post is not to defend caregivers as the next post will be talking about their own faults, but to give insight to how to help homecare business move forward and at the same time have great care delivered to our clients.
They say if you can’t see the problem, then you wont think of solution.
The role of the relatives goes a long way in the success of homecare services,if they employ the service to care allow them to care with little or no interference.Let them carry, feed or care the way they have been taught. They are professionals in this field,if you are better than them in the first place,I don’t think you will need the service.
Relatives should be aware that no caregiver want to fail,he or she want to be the best, want to care with all of his heart, want to prove to the company he or she is working with that he or she is worthy.
So as relatives allow them to do their job and if you think you have an idea on how things should be done,it is your idea which can be discussed with the caregivers but not to be enforced. If there is rationale behind the idea which is beneficial to client and safe to perform by the caregivers they will look int it and incorporate it in their plan.
They love to care for your loved ones so please accept them with love and trust them enough to do the job.

What is your plan for your aged parent?

There is this saying that "you don't go to war without armour".
You don't go to battle field unprepared.
My question today is as regards your parents, have you prepared for them as they gradually age?
The truth is someday, you are going to look at your mum or dad and realize that the beauty and handsomeness have given way to wrinkled faces.
Then, reality will beckon on you that your parents are becoming old and there is nothing to do about it.
So,do you have a plan for them concerning what is likely to come, especially health challenges?
Dear Readers, truth hurts but reality speaking, old age comes with lot of illness which at times proves difficult for you to handle.
There were times when our parents saved for our future to be bright,e.g saved for our feeding, saved for education, saved for our hospital bills, saved for everything,so life can be better for their children.
Now that they are old and fragile, have you saved for their health which is the most pressing challenge they'll have, have you saved for their up keep?
They have to be cared for and supported at this time but because there was no savings for them, they tend to suffer when little illness comes up.
My advice : Start a saving scheme for your parents today,so when there is a need to care for them, there will be enough money to do so and heavens will reward you greatly for caring for them.

MY HEART BLEEDS FOR HIM.....his children said he is given them headache.

Met this beautiful couple early this year, I must confess, they are really wonderful people but there was something that pierce my heart which I like every one to learn from.I know the couple will marvel at how I could still remember such thing if they read this article.
It was a beautiful day, after early morning rain on a Saturday, this lovely couple walked into the office and after exchange of pleasantries, our conversation started with "Please we need your service for grandpa,he is given us headache".
Sincerely, that was the first time I will hear that kind of statement from a child of a client.
It saddens my heart when I see the way elderly people are being treated by their family.
First of all, these people may be elderly to anyone, but they are parents to you.
They gave birth to you,fed you, went through series of hardship, pain, struggle, sacrifice that they can never come home to say just because they want life to be better for you.
They worked so hard until they can't work no more.
Now,you are a better person than they were, you are still strong and resourceful than they were,so....now that they have retired and tired they have become "headache".
Let us have this understanding,
"Aging is a continuous, complex, and dynamic process that begins with birth and ends with death. And unless we die in our early years, each of us will grow old and experience the effects of the aging process".
You and I are going to be so old one day and be like our aged parents and our children will use the same language for us if we have made them know that their grandparents are headaches.
Ageing is a process that needs the support of everyone around.Ill health is associated with ageing and the best we can all do is to support them, love them and make them happy.
Even though, our staffs are there to care for your loving aged fathers and mothers, please support your aged parents with not just money, but simple smile, holding there hands, touching them on their shoulders will go a long way.
May God let us grow old and enjoy great love from our children.

WHAT YOU DONT KNOW ABOUT HOME CARE

Majority of people are in need of HOMECARE  givers but there are many factors to be considered;
1.WHY DO YOU NEED HOMECARE?
Let the truth be told, care at the comfort of your home is not for everyone, its meant for those who have a genuine need for it.
For example;an eighty year old woman who stays with her children in the city, the children will go to work from 7 am and return back 7pm,when they are back, they are exhausted, they go to mama's room and spend 20 minutes and go to bed.
16 hours or more of complete loneliness, everyday multiply by God knows how many months or years, this is simply punishment.
Put yourself in her shoes, will you want to be treated this way?
She needs a companion, someone to talk to,someone to argue with, someone to play with and that is where a trained caregiver comes in.
She isn't a pet to be kept in a cage, she needs care and because you are not available cause of your work, someone trained to care must be around her all the time.

Another example is a 70 year old stroke patient who is recuperating at home,he has either hemiplegia, paraplegia or quadriplegia which is simply paralysis, psychologically,he is not stable, physically unstable, emotionally imbalance and generally unhappy.
You don't need a house boy or a relative to care for this man,it is simply an act of punishment if you do so, because what this man need is more that bathing or wearing cloth for him, what he need is wholistic care.
A professional that will care for him totally.
A professional care giver that knows what he wants before he ask, that has the basic and profound knowledge of what happened to him and what he might be going through and knows exactly what to do to help him.

2.CAN YOU AFFORD HOMECARE?

HOMECARE might be difficult to maintain, if you consider the financial aspect. This is as a result of the fact that we do not have plan for HOMECARE while saving for retirement.

HOMECARE is not a luxury but a necessity, we all want to live good lives and be comfortable.

So,the question should be how much can't I spend to be comfortable.

No matter how much home care is, it is worth it as long as the goals are met.

You should know that there is no fix price for homecare.

But always be careful when the price is too low or too high.

When the price is too low,be sure the service will be the same.

In a country far away from ours, approximately 50% of old people have engage the services of HOMECARE at one point or the other because they have the in depth knowledge is and have saved for it.Its like saving water for a journey to the desert.HOMECARE helps in prolonging life and what ever the cost, its worth it.

3.HOW CAN YOU GET HOMECARE COMPANY?

There are many companies here and there claiming to care for the elderly or sick ones.

But my number one HOMECARE company will always be Bluegate Homecare.

Tips when Caring for Geriatric Patients

Below are tips for nurses when caring for aging patients:

1.Strike up a conversation

As humans, it is essential that we interact meaningfully with one another. As nurses, therapeutic communication is a must when providing care. The elderly population, may be lacking and in great need of genuine human to human interaction.

When caring for geriatric patients, do not only focus on the task that should be done, converse with your patient. You may start asking them about their children, where their used to work, what their hobbies include and many more. Remember that we are caring for people, with emotions and the need for interaction and not just robots.

2. Be patient

When communicating with our aging patients, it is important that we listen to what they say. Though they may have lessened ability to express, we must be patient when communicating with them and let them finish what they want to say.

3. Tell them about the procedure beforehand

Elderly people tend to resist strangers and do not trust people. Because of this, before starting a health care procedure to them, tell them beforehand what you are going to do. This would avoid noncooperation when they don’t trust you.

4. Offer a warm blanket

A warm blanket is always a good idea no matter what age a person is, especially to geriatric patients who tend to be more sensitive to the cool environment of the hospital.

5. Be gentle with their skin

The skin of the elderly is very sensitive. With aging skin or a good possibility that they are on some sort of blood thinner or aspirin, IV starts and blood draws, some serious battle wounds may become a problem for the geriatric population. Always remember to be gentle when it comes to dealing with their skin. Sometimes, simple gestures such as using paper tape instead of silk tape can make a huge difference.

They say when you’re a nurse, you get to witness life from womb to tomb. This is because the nursing profession does not only care for one age group in particular. We nurses do not only care for newborn babies, but for toddlers, young adolescents, adults and elder lies as well. In all these, we must always bear in mind that not one age group is completely similar to another. We must understand that every age group has their own needs and concerns and that care must not be generalized. Nurses must provide appropriate care, attention and assistance to meet each patient’s needs.

One day, we will get old, too. Caring for elderly patients is not that easy, but no matter how challenging it gets, let us remember to treat our elderly patients with both respect and patience.
